Quick answer

In Jaipur, a taxi usually wins for airport runs, single trips and one long day out, because you pay only for the trip and carry no deposit or damage risk. Self drive usually wins when you keep a car for several days without covering many km, because outstation taxis often bill a daily minimum, 250 to 300 km on the terms checked. For the old city, neither is best: use a scooty, an auto or the metro. Run the sum below with your real quotes.

Self drive or taxi by type of trip

Start with the shape of your trip. Cost only decides it when both options would genuinely work.

How each one is really billed

A self-drive quote and a taxi quote count different things, which is why the two headline figures cannot be compared directly.

Self-drive bills

You pay rent per day, then add fuel, tolls and parking, and leave a deposit that you get back later. The Jaipur car rental listings show listed rent and deposit by provider. The rate may come with a km limit, so ask.

Outstation taxi bills

You pay per km, and fuel is normally inside that rate. The catch is the daily minimum. Jaipur operators publish different terms: KD Cab bills a minimum of 250 km per day, with tolls, parking and out-of-state tax extra plus a driver night charge between 9 pm and 6 am. Transrentals gives a 300 km daily minimum and warns that one-way trips may carry a return-empty charge.

So a taxi that sits at your hotel for a day may still bill the minimum for that day. Ask for this in writing before you book a multi-day trip.

App cabs in the city

App fares vary by time. Under the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines 2025, as reported, aggregators may charge up to twice the base fare at peak times, with states setting base fares. For a day of many short hops, these fares add up, so a day-hire taxi may work out better.

A worked example with invented numbers

Every rupee figure in this section is invented to show the method. They are round numbers, not quotes or current Jaipur prices. Assumed for this example: self drive at ₹2,000 a day, 15 km per litre, fuel at ₹100 a litre; taxi at ₹12 per km with a 250 km daily minimum and a ₹300 daily driver allowance.

Trip A is one day to Pushkar and back, about 300 km. Trip B is four days in and around Jaipur with one day out, 450 km in total. In this invented example, the two options come out almost level on Trip A, and self drive is clearly cheaper on Trip B because the taxi bills 1,000 km against 450 km driven. Change the assumptions and the answer can flip, so use your own quotes.

The costs that never appear in a quote

Money is only half the comparison. These are the things to weigh once the sums are close.

  • Deposit: self drive ties up money until it is refunded.
  • Damage risk: on self drive, a scrape in a tight lane may be yours to pay for. With a taxi it is the operator's problem.
  • Challans: fines on a self-drive car can follow you after you return it.
  • Time: pickup, inspection and return can take a real slice of a short trip.
  • Fatigue: someone must drive back from Pushkar after a full day.
  • Freedom: with self drive you stop when you like and change your plan without renegotiating.
  • Local knowledge: a driver knows where to park at Amer and in the old city.

Five questions that settle it

Answer these in order. The first clear answer usually decides.

  • Does someone in the group hold a valid licence for the vehicle and want to drive? If not, take a taxi.
  • Is the trip a single transfer? Take a taxi.
  • Will you spend several days with low km? Get a self-drive quote first.
  • Are you mainly in the old city, and only one or two people? Look at the scooty rental listings for Jaipur and the one-day scooty route.
  • Is it one long day out? Price both, using the Jaipur to Pushkar guide for the distance.

When this advice does not apply

Foreign visitors have extra licence rules, so read the guide for foreigners renting in India first. If nobody in the group holds a licence, self drive is off the table and a taxi is the answer.

CarBikeRent.com lists self-drive rentals and does not sell taxi trips, and it is not the provider of either. Final prices come from the operator you book with.

Frequently asked questions

Is self drive cheaper than a taxi for a Jaipur to Pushkar day trip?

Often it is close, because the round trip is about 300 km, near a taxi's daily minimum. Price both with real quotes. Do not forget fuel and tolls on the self-drive side, or the driver allowance on the taxi side.

Do taxis charge for days when the car does not move?

On a multi-day outstation booking, many operators bill a daily minimum, so an idle day can still cost money. Ask whether the minimum applies to every day or is averaged across the trip. Get the answer in writing.

Is driving in Jaipur difficult for a visitor?

The wide roads outside the walls are manageable for a confident driver. The old city is where visitors struggle, mostly with parking and tight lanes. Plan to leave a car outside it.

Is state tax charged on a taxi trip within Rajasthan?

KD Cab's published terms list state tax only for travel outside Rajasthan, and Pushkar is inside the state. Other operators may word this differently, so ask.

Can I hire a self-drive car and a driver together?

The Rent a Cab Scheme lets a hirer engage a licensed person to drive, but the provider and insurer must agree. Get that confirmed in writing before you travel.
