Quick answer

Pushkar is about 145 km from Jaipur: NH 48 to Ajmer, then 15 km over the Nag Pahar hills. A return trip is close to 300 km with local running, which is more than the daily allowance on the two-wheeler listings that state one. Take a car for three or more people or in hot months, and a proper motorcycle rather than a scooty if riding. Before leaving Jaipur, tell the provider your route and agree the km charge in writing.

The route from Jaipur to Ajmer and Pushkar

It is a simple drive: south-west out of Jaipur on NH 48, past Kishangarh, to Ajmer. Cab operators give the car time to Pushkar as two and a half to three hours, so allow more with stops or on a bike. Figures vary a little by source and by where in Jaipur you start.

Map apps usually offer two ways to finish. One goes through Ajmer and over the Nag Pahar hill road. The other skirts Ajmer on the bypass towards Pushkar Ghati. If you are not stopping in Ajmer, the bypass avoids city traffic; if you want to see Ajmer, go through it. Either way, the final stretch is a winding hill road, so it deserves more care than the highway.

Car or bike for this trip

The distance is easy for a car and a real day's ride on two wheels. Decide by group size, season and how much you are carrying.

The km sum that catches people out

This is the most important number in the plan. ONN Bikes motorcycle listings in Jaipur showed daily allowances of about 120 to 240 km at the last catalogue check. A 300 km return trip exceeds all of them in a single 24-hour rental. Car listings here state no km limit, though MG Car Rental's FAQ says most of its plans are unlimited and to check yours.

As an invented example, if a provider allowed 200 km and quoted ₹5 per extra km, a 300 km day would add ₹500. Booking two days often helps if the allowance doubles, and you also gain a night in Pushkar. The km limits guide shows how to work through a quote.

What to agree with the provider before you leave Jaipur

Do this before you set off, not after. The Rent a Motor Cycle Scheme, 1997 and the Rent a Cab Scheme, 1989 both make it the hirer's duty to keep the licence holder informed of their movements. Provider rules vary: MG Car Rental's FAQ allows outstation trips across India, while ONN Bikes promotes day trips from Jaipur without stating the conditions on that page.

Send your route on WhatsApp or email and keep the reply. Agree these points:

  • That you may take the vehicle to Ajmer and Pushkar, and overnight if planned.
  • The km allowance, the excess rate and how the reading is taken at return.
  • Who pays for tolls, and whether the car's FASTag is active and how usage is billed.
  • What happens in a breakdown: the number to call and who pays for towing.
  • Whether you can be refunded or swapped if the vehicle fails far from Jaipur.
  • The latest return time, since traffic into Jaipur can make you late and late fees can be steep.
  • For a bike, whether a second helmet is provided and whether luggage racks are allowed.

Tolls, fuel and timing on NH 48

Two-wheelers do not pay user fees on national highways, a position the government restated in 2025. Cars do pay. Under rules in force since 15 November 2025, a vehicle without a valid FASTag pays twice the fee in cash, or 1.25 times by UPI, so check the tag before you set off.

Leave by 7 am to clear Jaipur traffic and arrive before the heat. Refuel before the hill section. Plan to cover the Nag Pahar road in daylight on the way back, and avoid night riding on the highway altogether. If you are tired after Pushkar, stay the night, as it costs less than an accident.

Parking and crowds in Pushkar

Rajasthan Tourism describes Pushkar's lake with 52 ghats at the heart of the town. Route guides warn that the old core is narrow lanes, so park on the outer roads and walk in. Keep valuables out of sight in a parked car.

The Pushkar Fair changes everything. It follows the Hindu calendar in the month of Kartik, around October or November. Secondary reports give about 17 to 24 November for 2026, with Kartik Purnima on 24 November, but check Rajasthan Tourism for the confirmed programme. Expect crowds, ask locally about parking and road restrictions, and book your vehicle early.

If something goes wrong on the way

A long way from the branch, a calm order of steps saves money and arguments.

  • Get people and the vehicle to a safe place, and call the provider before arranging any repair.
  • Photograph the vehicle, the location and any other vehicle or damage.
  • Do not agree a private settlement at the roadside without telling the provider.
  • Follow the steps in the guide to who pays after an accident, and keep every receipt.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Pushkar from Jaipur by road?

Rajasthan Tourism gives about 145 km, and cab guides give up to 150 km. Allow two and a half to three hours by car without stops. A motorcycle with breaks will take longer.

Can I take a rented bike from Jaipur to Pushkar?

Ask first, because rules differ by provider and the km allowance matters. Look at the Royal Enfield Classic 350 in Jaipur and the other bike rental listings for Jaipur. Get the permission and km terms in writing.

Is a day trip to Pushkar worth it, or should I stay overnight?

A day trip works if you leave early and only want the lake and the Brahma Temple. If you also want Ajmer, stay a night, or you will be driving home tired in the dark.

Which car suits a family going to Pushkar?

For four people, any sedan or compact SUV on the Jaipur car rental listings is enough. For six or seven, see the family car guide. Check luggage room with all seats in use.

Do I need permission to go to Ajmer or Pushkar if it is the same state?

Yes, ask anyway. Staying in Rajasthan avoids interstate questions, but the provider may still limit the area or the km. The rental schemes also expect you to keep the provider informed of your movements.
