Documents you need to rent a bike, scooty or car in India

The documents required to rent a bike or car in India: which licence class covers what, when DigiLocker counts, and what never to leave as security.

Quick answer

You need a valid driving licence for that class of vehicle, and most providers also ask for a government photo ID, sometimes with local address proof. Only the licence is a legal requirement: the rest is each provider's own list. A scooty comes under the gearless (MCWOG) class, a geared bike under MCWG and a car under LMV. Show your original Aadhaar if asked, but do not leave it as security.

The licence is the one document the law insists on

Section 3 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 says no one may drive a motor vehicle in a public place without an effective driving licence authorising them to drive that vehicle. Section 10 then divides licences into classes, so the real question is whether yours names the right class.

A car licence does not cover a two-wheeler, and a gearless licence does not, on its face, cover a geared bike. If yours shows only MCWG and you want a scooty, ask the provider first: the Act lists the two classes separately, and published guidance on whether MCWG also covers gearless scooters is not consistent. Check the class and the expiry date on your licence before you book, not at the counter.

You do not need a commercial licence for a rental. Section 3 requires specific entitlement to drive a transport vehicle, but it excepts a motor cab or motor cycle hired for your own use or rented under a section 75 scheme. Section 13 makes a licence effective throughout India, so one issued in your home state also works in Jaipur, Mumbai or Bangalore.

What providers ask for on top of the licence

Nothing in the Act fixes a list of ID documents, which is why two providers in one city can ask for different things. Published terms read on 4 November 2026 show the range:

  • ONN Bikes' Jaipur listing asks for a valid driving licence as an original hard copy, a government-issued ID and local address proof.
  • Royal Brothers' FAQ asks Indian customers for an original licence and original Aadhaar, says a learner licence is not accepted, and says PAN or a passport may be requested as well.
  • Royal Brothers' FAQ also says the original licence is submitted at pickup and returned with the vehicle, except in Bangalore.

The document that catches visitors out

Local address proof is awkward if you live in another city. Before you travel, ask what the provider accepts, and whether a hotel booking counts. An answer in writing saves an argument at the counter.

Car providers set their own lists too, so read the terms behind any self-drive car listing in Jaipur before paying. CarBikeRent.com only compares listings: the provider decides what it will accept.

Is a DigiLocker or mParivahan licence valid?

For the police, yes. In August 2018 the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways advised states to accept a licence, registration certificate or other document presented through DigiLocker or mParivahan, and to treat it at par with the certificate issued by the transport authority.

A photo of your licence in your gallery is different. The advisory covers records pulled through those two platforms, not pictures.

For a rental provider, not necessarily. The advisory deals with producing documents to authorities, so a private business can still insist on the hard copy, and some do in writing. Carry the card and keep the app copy as well.

That app copy matters more than it sounds. Section 130 requires a driver to produce their licence when a uniformed police officer asks, so if a provider is holding your card during the rental, DigiLocker is what you will show. Set it up before you leave home.

What not to hand over

Showing an original so someone can check it is one thing. Leaving it behind as security is another. Hold this line:

  • Original Aadhaar as security. Let them see it, then take it back.
  • Your passport. You need it for flights and hotels, and a foreign visitor needs it on them.
  • A blank signed cheque or a signed agreement with empty fields.
  • An OTP you did not expect, or card details over the phone.

How strong is the Aadhaar point?

Be realistic about this. Business Today reported in August 2026 that UIDAI has repeatedly cautioned against indiscriminate sharing and storing of Aadhaar copies, and described a proposed framework moving hotels to app and QR checks. It was still described as proposed, and no rule aimed at rental shops was found, so this is sound caution rather than a ban you can quote.

If a provider insists on keeping an original you will not leave, offer a higher refundable deposit or book elsewhere. If its terms do hold your licence, ask for a written receipt, and read how rental deposits work before paying.

Age limits and second drivers

Section 4 sets the minimum age for driving in a public place at 18. The one exception is a motor cycle of up to 50cc, which may be driven from 16. Section 4(2) separately sets 20 for a transport vehicle, subject to section 18.

Providers can set a higher age of their own. Royal Brothers' FAQ says 18 with a valid licence, and older than 21 for superbikes. If you are under 21, confirm the minimum before you pay.

Everyone who will drive needs their own valid licence and should be added before pickup. Zoomcar's published policy, for one, lists a charge for an unlisted co-driver, and an unnamed driver can complicate any damage claim.

Why providers are strict about this

The provider carries legal risk too. Section 5 says an owner or person in charge must not let someone who fails sections 3 or 4 drive. Section 180 punishes that with up to three months in prison, a ₹5,000 fine, or both, and section 181 sets the same penalty for the driver.

So a shop that waves you through without looking at your licence is not doing you a favour. If you do not hold the right licence, read what happens if you rent without one first.

Your document checklist for pickup day

This covers an Indian licence holder. If you hold a foreign licence, use the guide for foreigners renting in India instead. The vehicle itself needs its own checks, which are in the pickup checklist.

  • Original licence showing the right class and a future expiry date
  • The same licence available in DigiLocker or mParivahan
  • Government photo ID, with the original to show and a copy to give
  • Local address proof, if the provider asked for it
  • Booking confirmation and the agreed price in writing
  • A second driver's licence, if someone else will drive
  • The deposit in the form the provider accepts

How far to rely on this guide

This is general information based on the texts listed below as they read on 4 November 2026. It is not legal advice, and a provider's own terms can ask for more than the law does.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rent a bike with only a photo of my licence?

Usually not. Most published terms ask for the original, and a gallery photo is not covered by the 2018 DigiLocker advisory. Some providers ask you to upload pictures when booking, but they still expect the original at pickup.

Can an 18-year-old rent a car or bike?

Section 4 allows driving from 18, and some providers accept that age. Section 4(2) sets 20 for a transport vehicle, though, so an 18 or 19-year-old should ask how the provider's vehicles are registered and what its minimum age is. Get the answer in writing before paying.

My licence is from another state. Will it work?

Yes. Section 13 of the Motor Vehicles Act makes a licence effective throughout India. The provider may still want local address proof, which is its own rule and has nothing to do with where the licence was issued.

Can I rent without giving Aadhaar?

It depends on the provider, because the Act does not require Aadhaar for a rental. Some terms name Aadhaar specifically, while others accept any government-issued ID. Ask whether a passport or voter ID will do before you book.

My licence expires during the rental. Does that matter?

Yes. Section 3 requires an effective licence every time you drive, so plan as though it stops on the expiry date. Renew it first, or end the rental before that date.
