Fortuner on rent in Jaipur: why rates differ and what to confirm

Look at the table below and the gap between the lowest and highest listing is large for what seems like one car. The listings are mostly describing different things. These are the differences visible in this catalogue.

• 'Starting from' or a fixed rate: MG Car Rental's figure is published as 'Starting From', so it is the floor and not necessarily your price.
• Variant: most listings just say Fortuner, while one names a variant. Fortuners range from a petrol 4x2 to a diesel 4x4, so one name covers quite different cars.
• Gearbox: the catalogue shows both manual and automatic Fortuners, and the two may not be priced alike.
• Model year: the listings span several years. Ask for the year, and whether the 'New Model' label on a listing means the current shape.
• Deposit: a lower rate with a higher deposit, or the reverse, can be a different trade-off and not a better deal.
• Dates: rates can move with demand, so a listed rate is not a promise for a festival weekend.

Send every provider the same message with your dates and ask for these five details. Then compare the total, not the headline rate.

Do not rely on the catalogue's fuel and gearbox fields for this. Some Jaipur Fortuner listings show a manual petrol, while Autocar India lists the current petrol as automatic only. The provider's answer is the one that counts, and a photo of the fuel flap label and gear lever takes them a minute.

• Exact variant, model year, gearbox and fuel, with a photo of that car.
• Total for your dates, including tax.
• Km included and the rate for each extra km. MG Car Rental's FAQ says most plans are unlimited, but check yours; other listings state nothing.
• Deposit amount, how it is taken and when it comes back.
• Whether a day is 24 hours, and the charge if you return late.

MG Car Rental marks its Fortuner as self drive. The other Fortuner listings here do not say either way, so ask. The two options are priced differently: self drive is a rent per day, while a chauffeur-driven car is usually billed by distance with a daily minimum and a driver allowance. The Rent a Cab Scheme, 1989 says a hirer may engage a person with a valid driving licence to drive the vehicle during the hire. So a family with a trusted driver can, under the scheme, use a self-drive car.

Do not assume your provider allows it. The contract and insurance may name only the person who signed, so get written confirmation that your driver is covered, and send their licence in advance.

A Fortuner is long at 4,795 mm and has a turning radius of 5.8 metres, so the walled city and hotel lanes are hard work. Park it outside the old city and use an auto for the bazaars. It is at its best on highways and for arrivals where the car is part of the occasion.

It lists seven seats, but with all rows up Autocar India gives the boot as 296 litres. Five adults and bags is more realistic. If you just need space, the Scorpio N and S11 comparison shows cheaper options, and the Jaipur car rental listings show the rest.

Budget for fuel. The tank holds 80 litres, so a 'return it full' rule on a car handed over full can mean a large bill at the end of a long drive. Ask what level you get it at, and keep your pump receipt.

A Fortuner is expensive to repair, so small marks can become large deductions. Protect yourself before the keys change hands.

• Check the plate. A rent-a-cab motor cab must show yellow characters on a black background under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules.
• Film the whole car at pickup, including alloys, bumpers and the roof.
• For weddings, tell the provider about any flowers, tape or decoration, and agree in advance what is allowed on the paint.
